I've been dabbling in German for quite a while now. The key takeaway? The most effective app, much like any workout gear, is the one you genuinely engage with! I'm the type of learner who thrives on using various resources that present the material in unique ways. This isn't always a walk in the park for me. I've explored a ton of programs, books, and apps over the years, from the big names to the fresh faces. While podcasts, social media posts, and daily emails can be super useful for reinforcing what you learn and expanding your vocabulary, relying on just one of those won't cut it. Even if you're a language whiz, you'll still need a mix of tools. If you're not consistently practicing Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing, it could take ages to reach even a basic level of fluency. Otherwise, you might just scrape by. Regarding specific apps, I've discovered a few that are fantastic for laying a solid groundwork while ensuring you don't miss anything important. The ones I use every day include Chatterbug (my top pick), HerrProfessor, Memrise, Readlang, VHS Lern-Portal (which is free and aligns with the Goethe and Telc exam formats), Nachrichtleicht, and I also follow several IG and YouTube educators, with Dein_Sprachcoach being my favorite for quick daily German exposure. As a language teacher with plenty of experience, I decided to give this app a shot. It’s pretty awkward to use, lacks a solid curriculum structure, and when I attempted to cancel after the free week trial, I got the runaround. Seriously, steer clear of this app.

Chatterburg is definitely the top choice for picking up a language online. I kicked off at the A2 level in German, and within a year, I managed to pass the B1 level. The instructors are super committed, and the classes are really engaging.

There’s no technical support to be found. I faced some serious tech problems from the provider. Most lessons kicked off 5-10 minutes late due to these issues. Plus, Chatterbug interrupted the sessions while my tutor was trying to explain things to me. Honestly, I’m quite let down.

For starters, the placement test feels a bit off, putting you at a level that doesn’t match your real skills. The exercises are generally solid. Each day, you get a new text to read and translate. Plus, you can write a text of about six sentences that mirrors the reading material. But, there’s no way to get feedback on what you’ve written. Then there are the drills for memorizing words and phrases. You see a word in your target language and have to write down its translation. It can be a bit overwhelming and annoying. It’s a creative approach, but honestly, most apps do this too.

What I really enjoyed were the live sessions with a fantastic range of tutors. You’ve got grad students, older folks, and others who are on the platform to help eager learners. I quickly found a few tutors I liked and made sure to book them whenever I could. I never had a negative experience. They all seemed genuinely passionate and knowledgeable.
